This week, I felt the truth of something I’ve known for a long time: we’re not meant to do this alone.
Rory and I spent several days attending the AA Convention here in Bali. Rory does not do AA, but he came to support me. We blended our time between deep recovery workshops and quiet afternoons reading by the sea. It was a nourishing rhythm - being in community, then resting together.
The book I’ve been reading, Recovery with Yoga by Brian Hyman, offered the perfect companion. One passage struck me so deeply I snapped a photo and shared it with our Mindful Life Practice WhatsApp group:
“The Sanskrit term kalyāṇa mitra can be defined as ‘spiritual companions.’
It means a group of like-minded friends with whom we share truths and concerns.
It is people we trust, whose suggestions and solutions are appreciated and reciprocated.
It is a collection of seekers bonded through common goals and interests,
who interrelate with openness, compassion, and equality, as well as dedication, truthfulness and confidentiality.”
We find kalyāṇa mitra in so many places:
In the fellowship of AA.
In the sangha of Buddhist practice.
In the kula of our yoga collective.
In every circle where we gather - not to fix each other, but to be with each other.
This is what we’re building here online and in person at The Mindful Life Practice. And you’re invited to be part of it.
Here’s what’s happening in our community this week - a mix of free and members-only gatherings to support your healing, practice, and growth:
